VonniKoromanti, alongside the Coveside Concerts management team presents Murder She Wrote – the ultimate Reggae meets Dancehall event, celebrating Chaka Demus & Pliers, featuring Tanya Stephens, Richie Spice, Leroy Sibbles, and Jamaica’s original Dancehall Queen Carlene. Murder She Wrote takes place on Saturday April 29, 2023, Plantation Cove, Priory, St. Ann.

Thirty-odd years ago the combination of Chaka Demus’ edgy deejay style coupled with the smooth vocals of Pliers created one of the most successful acts in Jamaican music history. The duo became the first Jamaican act to place three consecutive singles in the Top Five of the British music chart. The genesis was their megahit and lead song “Murder She Wrote” from the 1993 Tease Me album which climbed to number 27 on the UK Singles Chart. Since then, “Murder She Wrote” has been sampled by a pantheon of artistes and was listed by Billboard amongst the ’50 Best Song Interpolations of the 21st Century”.

Murder She Wrote is Coveside Concerts offering of performative dancehall in its authentic glory showcasing its elements of swag and style alongside its enduring relationship with its parent Reggae – a combination which has served Jamaica well on the international scene.

WOMEN IN DANCEHALL

With a career spanning more than three decades, internationally acclaimed Dancehall and Reggae artiste, Tanya Stephens has managed to create an enviable musical legacy. Her prolific songwriting skills coupled with her rich tone and straight-talking personality has transported her into a realm of music royalty. Two years after the 1994 release of her debut album Big Things a Gwaan Stephens was catapulted into the spotlight with “Yuh Nuh Ready fi Dis Yet” on Dave Kelly’s record-breaking Joyride Riddim. Since then, she has flooded the market with a plethora of hits including “Handle the Ride”, “Big Ninja Bike”, “These Streets”, and “Its a Pity”.

Fashion and dance have always been at the core of dancehall. Jamaica’s original Dancehall Queen Carlene, first crowed in 1992 is the perfect embodiment of both. The originator of the butterfly dance, she reinforced her pride of place as the face of fashion, feminine sexuality, and the queen of dance in the 1992 Murder She Wrote music video.

ROOTS OF REGGAE

There can be no doubt that the progressions of Leroy Sibbles basslines have provided the backdrop for much of Jamaican popular music. The charismatic vocalist, bass player, and songwriter is perhaps best known for his work with The Heptones. Yet, Sibbles has cemented his personal space in Jamaican music history as an arranger and solo vocalist. His well-known instrumental “Full Up” popularised internationally by Musical Youth’s recording of “Pass the Dutchie” an adaptation of the Mighty Diamonds’ “Pass the Kutchie” is one of many basslines he has created.

Richie Spice, Since the release of “Grooving my Girl” which placed him in the spotlight Spice has turned out a world-class catalogue including hits “Brown Skin“, “Righteous Youths“, “Earth a Run Red “, “The Plane Land” “Righteous Youths“, “Earth a Run Red “, “The Plane Land” and “Together We Stand” and a prolific messenger has used the medium of Reggae to do good, guaranteeing that inspirational roots reggae is not relegated to a bygone era but continues as a thriving, evolving genre. An ardent supporter of Food for the Poor he continues to contribute to charitable causes through his Rockhall Charity.
